After going to the Lab, you go right to the Teien Garden, where you get your starter Pokemon.
Aika had finished sorting out the items in her bag, coming back from Professor Briar's lab. She was happy to at least attempt to get started on this journey, eager to obtain her first (real) Pokemon (She did not count Crunchy as such, as he originally belonged to Keita) and she was curious as to what it was. Keita told her that it would be an interesting experience, meeting Shaymin, the legendary Pokemon of ... what was she the legendary Pokemon of again? Pretty flowers and stuff? Boy, did that ever sound froofy.
Crunchy was, of course, at her side, holding her hand protectively. He was not happy with the prospect of having to share Aika's attention, but, then again, he knew her better than to think that she was going to let him do all the fighting. Besides, in some places, that was considered Pokemon cruelty.
Didn't stop him from hating it.
"We're here..."
They both walked into a small garden, filled with lush greenery and flowers, of course.
What else would one expect from a Shaymin, after all?

The garden was calm and serene. And deserted, at least at first glance. Once Aika and Crunchy entered, a strange feeling could be felt,a s if a powerful being had focused its attention on the pair. It was a gentle as it was powerful.
Soundlessly, a small green and white hedgehog-like Pokemon crawled from beneath the leaves of a large flower. The Shaymin walked towards the pair, surveying Aika with intelligent, ancient eyes. The Shaymin plopped onto her bottom right at Aika's feet and grinned up at the girl "Hiya! Who are you?"
The scent of fresh flowers filled the air, not fading in the slightest as a breeze blew through the garden. Everyone in the garden was filled with the feeling of peace.

Aika looked as if she was about to step on the creature, unaware that she even existed. But, the moment the creature spoke, Aika's food backed up a moment, as she stared down at the Shaymin in front of her.
"Oh, hello..."
Crunchy stared at the Pokemon, unsure of what to make of her; she was a new Pokemon to him, as most Pokemon were. But he held out his paw for her to shake anyways.
"... I'm Aika... I was told by Professor Briar to come here. Said something about getting a Pokemon?"
Sounded about right to her. This looked like the 'Get a new Pokemon' place... if the Pokemon was a living plant. Not that she wanted a Bellsprout or Oddish or anything; too many weaknesses, but that was what this place looked like.
But she did not stay that to the Shaymin. That would be rude.
"I'm a new Pokemon Trainer..."

Shaymin blinked slowly at Aika, processing the information. Her small eyes bored into Aika's, delving into the girl's soul, testing to see what Pokemon would fit this trainer.
"Hello Pokemon Trainer Aika, I am Shaymin" Shaymin nodded a greeting "Professor Briar sends many young ones here for a Pokemon. Answer a few questions and one might becomes yours!"
Shaymin settled down and thought for a moment. When she had decided on a few likely questions, she asked "What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen Swellow? Would you feed a starving child? Would you save a village of people if you knew it would be the end of you? And the last, most important one of all, what is your favorite color?"
After the list of questions, Shaymin settled down and waited for the answers, sweet-smelling scent drifting lazily through the air.

Questions!? Great. What was worse than walking around looking for the lab, or the garden? Answering questions, especially personal ones.
However... once again, she knew better than to answer the questions with any lies; that would probably get her a wrong Pokemon or something. No, this Shaymin's questions she had to answer these questions as truthfully as she could.
She plopped down in front of the Shaymin, deep in thought about how to answer them. They were all incredibly important questions to answer...
"How big is the Swellow?" she said, answering the question with another question, "And where in Kinamoto is this Swellow from? Those from drier places have less moisture in their wings to worry about than those from the beachside... But that's quite beside the point... I would say 'pretty fast' answers that question sufficiently... I would not only feed the starving child, I would make sure that child knows how to fend for his or herself after I fed them. It makes no sense to me to just feed the child when I could give him or her so much more."
She felt a little more confident now that she knew she could answer these questions...
"If the village of people deserves saving, then yes, I would. However, if the village is full of people who rightfully deserve death, then I would leave them to die. Fortunately, most of the villages I've seen are full of people who deserve life... so they would probably get saved if it came down to it..."
She thought a moment about the last question...
"I would have to say my favorite color is blue... like on Crunchy here."
She gave her Munchlax a pat on the head as she said it.
"Anymore questions?"

The Shaymin pondered silently for many moments on Aika's answers. Then she stood and shook herself, releasing a cloud of pollen that was quickly grabbed by a breeze and dispersed.
"I have made my decision young Aika" Shaymin stated "These are your choices. All would make fine teammates, but I would advise you to choose carefully."
Five Pokemon stepped out from behind several large flowering bushes and trees, all called by the pollen.
"Cacnea has been looking for a trainer for some time now, but it has never been the perfect fit" Shaymin began, nodding at the spiky looking desert dweller "Trapinch would fit your practical personality. It uses traps to capture prey after all" The Trapinch stood next to its desert kin. Shaymin continued "You see things in black and white, although the world is really shades of grey. You do not stop to think of the consequences of your actions, or that you might not be qualified to make such important decisions. Carvahana has a wild temperament and does not care for consequences either." The Water type peeked out from a nearby stream. "Natu's insight and natural intelligence could prove a match for your own love of knowledge. Its burgeoning ability of foresight might help you learn to plan ahead more. Lastly, Snubbul is proud and extremely picky about those it likes. Everyone else it treats with disdain. I believe you can guess what this choice says about you Pokemon trainer Aika." Shaymin's tone was quiet, unjudging, as the last two Pokemon came to stand next to the first three.
"Now, which do you choose?"

Aika was now confronted with a harsh decision. She hated just picking one of the Pokemon out. There was a good part of her that just wanted to snatch all five of these up and run off, but she had a feeling Shaymin might have rained down fiery wrath upon her, and she did not want that.
Instead, she stood up, and examined each of the Pokemon. They each looked very ready to help someone on their Pokemon journey, and were eager to make a new friend, to which she was happy to comply... but which one was the most practical?
And they were all so cute!
The Cacnea had possibilities; she loved grass type Pokemon, and she was fond of her brother's own Cacturne. However, she knew better than to get one that had such a vulnerability to fire types. It might have been safer to leave that poor Cacnea here.
The Carvahana was most certainly out; as practical as it was as a water type Pokemon, it was a fish. Too much maintenance, unless she wanted to carry a fish bowl around.
Snubbul, fortunately for the both of them, was not a choice Aika was willing to think about, if for no other reason than her stubbornness refused to admit it was a good fit.
It was down to the Natu and the Trapinch. They were both absolutely adorable, as she expected them to be. They were both also very practical; the Natu had it's own brain to knock against her own, and that Trapinch...
Words could not explain how that Trapinch made her feel. It was like she had found her [second] best friend...
She picked up the Trapinch and gave it a large hug.
"I think this one is perfect..." she said with a smile, "And I hope the others get a trainer too... but... this one just called to me..."

Shaymin nodded happily, saying "Good choice! You two look like you will be fast friends."
The other Pokemon looked slightly disappointed, but Shaymin reassured them "Don't worry, there are many more flowers in the garden."
The Legendary took the time to go over to each Pokemon and touch noses/beaks/faces with each of them. After receiving Shaymin's blessing, each Pokemon disappeared back into the depths of the Garden.
Lastly, Shaymin approached Aika and her two Pokemon, one old, one new. "I give you, Pokemon trainer Aika, my blessing, in hopes that you will heed my words and stay true to yourself. Crunchy the Munchlax, keep this girl safe; give her a stalwart companion through out the trials of the road. Trapinch, I hope you will learn many things from Aika, as I know she will from you" Shaymin completed her benediction by throwing a new burst of scent into the air. All the plant life within sight seemed to perk up, becoming healthier, greener, and brighter.
"Good luck on your journey, Trainer and Pokemon alike" Shaymin called out her goodbye as she disappeared back into the gardens, at once becoming lost in the flowers.
